Ilya Glazunov is a Russian artist who combined realism and symbolism in his work. His paintings impress the viewer with the sheer size and straightforwardness depicted on them.

“The Market of Our Democracy" is Glazunov's largest-sized painting. The viewer is surprised by her compositional complexity and the abundance of characters. Painted in 1999, the painting is the most ideological in the entire work of the artist.

Creation shows the thoughts of the common people living in post-Soviet Russia. The painter with pain and fury boldly collects on one canvas all the lawlessness and the abomination of the end of the century. A nightmare for the artist is debauchery and corruption, prevailing at that difficult time.

According to Glazunov’s idea, the picture sums up the rule of Boris Yeltsin. Yeltsin himself is shown on a canvas with a conductor’s stick. He is still trying to rule the people depicted around him. Glazunov chose not to make Yeltsin the center of composition, but depicts it on the side, among many other figures. The artist wants to show that the organizer of what is happening in the picture is precisely the person with the baton. Many attributes of Western culture on the canvas speak of Yeltsin’s faith in the American dream, which was never realized for anyone.

In the lower right corner, Glazunov depicts himself with a poster on his neck asking “Where are you, Russia’s faithful sons,” hinting that only he is faithful to Russia on the canvas. All kinds of posters with requests and announcements of very provocative political content are full of paintings.
